How To Get a Senior Citizen Card

Updated on September 12, 2010

Learning how to get a senior citizen card in your local area doesn’t need to be difficult. Firstly, we need to identify what we mean by senior citizen card and what it is. Many people search online for the term “senior citizen card” and that’s a pretty vague term for what it may be.

Senior citizen cards for public transit

Often seniors are eligible for a senior citizen transit card. Senior Citizens (considered of age 65 and older) wishing to ride buses, trollies, and subway systems free of charge in many major cities can apply for this senior citizen card for public transit. Typically the senior citizen must show one of these three forms of ID:

  • Railroad Retirement Annuity Card
  • Medicare Card (Issued by the Social Security Administration)
  • PA Senior Citizen Transit ID Card

Senior citizen Medicare card

Medicare is offered to more than 40 million Americans and United States citizens over the age of 65 are eligible to apply for Medicare. You will need to contact the Social Security Administration’s Medicare page or visit the Medicare website for more information and to apply for your senior citizen card.

The Medicare card looks like the red, white and blue card shown here. Also, your Medicare senior citizen card will be required as proof of your Medicare health insurance. It's important that you keep this safe in the event of a medical emergency.

After applying for Medicare you should receive your senior citizen card for Medicare in the mail within roughly 30 days. If you have not received your Medicare card and it has been more than 30 days, you are welcome to call and check on your application at their toll free number:  1-800-772-1213

Restaurant discounts with a senior citizen card

The application for a Senior Citizen Transit Identification Card is often available to download from the issuer’s website or may be obtained in person at one of the issuer’s customer service locations and participating State Legislator Offices (depending upon the area). Applicants for a Senior Citizen Transit Identification Card must usually appear in person to complete the application process and is a one-time step.

Other forms of a senior citizen card are those given to senior citizens at restaurants which allow a discount to those that qualify. Seniors are appreciated at these restaurants and costs are considerably lower for meals at participating restaurants. If you’re curious how to receive one of these cards, please inquire at the restaurant the next time you dine out away from home.

Greeting cards for senior citizens

Many greeting cards are available for sending to your loved senior citizen. They’ll appreciate the time you took to think of them and remind them of your love for them. Often times they’re enrolled into senior citizen homes and may feel lonely and need some form of contact with loved ones from outside. Please take the time to remember your seniors and show your love and respect with a  senior citizen greeting card during the next holiday.
